First understand the goals of the business. Is it growth, sustainability, new capabilities etc.

Start with information from3 key sources:-

1) Top level management, board of directors, chairman, CFO, COO etc. (strategic input)

2) Senior business unit heads, operational heads and general managers (operational input)

3) End-users (here you can take a survey to get more feedback, and find trends)

Then start with an IT vision, this is a high level account of your statement of intent. A few sentences or5-6 bullet points might be enough. The things you set out to do should support or directly achieve the company's goals.

Then from your vision build out your strategy. One way to start this is look across the four key Ps (easy to remember :). For each P, what can you do to achieve your vision?3-6 sentences for each P might be enough. Or you might want more detail, depending on your company.

Then you can break each one down further.

- How will you handle Business Relationship Management?

- How will you develop your team?

- What is your hiring strategy? Personal development strategy?

Product

- Can you reduce costs of your IT estate?

- Do you need to build out functionality?

- Can you add value in other ways? How?

- Do you need any strategic shifts? (BOYD, Cloud, Mobility? etc.)

Processes

- What can you improve? Make simpler?

- Do you need more governance? Less governance?

- Can you review your SLAs? Financial management?

Partners

- How will you leverage partners?

- Do you need to establish any new key relationships?

- Can you reduce costs?

- Do you need any strategic shifts? Outsourcing? Insourcing? Software development partners?

Information technology is the backbone for any business. So, most important is to manage your IT department properly. If your IT infrastructure works and updated then your business achieve anything. It is not necessary that what your employees want in their systems, It is important to take every system in a domain with proper group policies. Because employees don't know what they are doing, you can not trust on your employee for their use. they may be non technical persons, So they don't know what they are doing. So, keep your IT infrastructure in a restrictive mode. This is good for your business and also for employees.
