Nice question! I cannot believe that you have zero communication skill, I have clearly understood the e-mail you have written which, means that you have communication skill.

Communication is all about conveying your messages (verbal, written, body language, eye contact and facial expression) to other people clearly and unambiguously. It is also about receiving information that others are sending to you.

The following are the important communication skill- which needs to be sharpened, to be an effective communicator.

1. Listening: Being a good listener is one of the best ways to be a good communicator.

2. Nonverbal Communication: Your body language, eye contact, hand gestures, and tone all color the message you are trying to convey.

3. Clarity and Concision: Try to convey your message in as few words as possible. Say what you want clearly and directly.

4. Friendliness: Through a friendly tone, a personal question, or simply a smile, you will encourage your coworkers to engage in open communication with you.

5. Confidence: It is important to be confident in all of your interactions with others. Confidence ensures your coworkers that you believe in and will follow through with what you are saying.

6. Empathy: Even when you disagree with anyone, it is important for you to understand and respect their point of view.

7. Open-Mindedness: A good communicator should enter any conversation with a flexible, open mind.

8. Respect: People will be more open to communicating with you if you convey respect for them and their ideas.

9. Feedback: Being able to appropriately give and receive feedback is an important communication skill. Managers and supervisors should continuously look for ways to provide employees with constructive feedback

. Picking the Right Medium: An important communication skill is to simply know what form of communication to use.

To practice these skills, you may have informal discussion with colleagues, attend party, meetings and also go to a club of your choice. And  rewind the brain when you are alone. See what you have said OK and which needs to be sharpened. That is all about communication. Wish you all the best!

Hi Dear ,

Definitely without Strong communication skills nobody can even reach the managerial level at any Field   , especially if you will be handling a project or a team work ! the basic communication skills needed are :

Leadership is what lets us motivate our employees to be a part of the general effort in order to produce and deliver. All the concepts of Teamwork, Loyalty and Motivation fall under this title and their level is directly dependent on Manager’s Leadership skill. Leaders have the advantage of leading their men instead of pushing them.

Communication is our ability to pass our message through to other stakeholders and it’s naturally present everywhere where people interact with one another, however nowhere it’s as critical as vis-à-vis our Senior Management. If our employees do not understand us completely – there are other ways to make things go our way, but if our superiors do not understand us – it’s a much more serious business.

Collaboration is the skill of dealing with those who are not necessarily a part of our hierarchy, so most issues should be resolved through negotiation. Our collaboration skills are called to the test mainly when we are working with clients or with other departments.

Over 60% of work time is spent by a project manager  in communications. Therefore without communications skills one cannot succeed as a project manager.

A project manager has to have the skills to prepare an effective Communication Management Plan for the project and adopt the same for communication in course of project execution.

The most important part of management is communication management,

Mr. Fazlur has mentioned good points, besides that I can add that you should identify your stakeholders first then try to find the best way for communication based on their abilities and interest and then by communication skills improve your interactions.

But zero communication skills doesn't exist...;)

Common errors and simple solutions

Errors

Some things to avoid are:

  • only ever giving negative or redirecting feedback
  • sandwiching negative feedback in between two positive feedback messages – the person will only hear the good
  • storing up 12 months of feedback and dumping this on employees in one meeting
  • being insincere when giving positive feedback
  • not being direct enough or honest enough - fluffing around the issues
  • yelling, screaming or getting emotional
  • allowing the employee to steer the conversation
  • communicating in an inappropriate forum – e.g. email, publicly, hallway conversations
  • avoid making it personal and by the way it’s not about YOU, focus on the receiver
  • being unprepared and 'winging it'.

Solutions

Things to try instead are:

  • being balanced and giving positive and negative feedback when its due
  • be direct and honest and give the feedback truthfully
  • be timely in your feedback and communication as it happens – don’t put it off
  • practice and prepare what you are going to say – be specific, use examples
  • practice and prepare what you are going to say – be specific
  • be prepared you are the manager and you need display a calm approach – do not match behaviour
  • allowing the employee to steer the conversation
  • always communicate face to face – so much is lost in translation when you shoot off emails, also as a general rule praise in public criticise in private
  • focus on facts, have all the right information and evidence if possible and use examples
  • have a script and plan what you are going to say.

Therefore to excel in life you need to be good at communicating your needs & thoughts.. To excel as a manager one should be able to clearly communicate his/ her goals to the team.
