Performance measures can be done through either the balance sheet of the income statement. An analyst will look at ratios done by comparing numbers from each column at the balance sheet, or numbers compared to a base number in the income statement.  At the end of that analysis session, an analyst should be able to locate ratios from other companies in the same industry.
