feel free to start any design but when you have concept to do something you should follow you concept
1. Open autocad from start menu or desktop short cut.
2. In the file menu select New.
3. Select desired template for 2d or 3d as you wish. (for 2d select Acad)
4. Set the units by typing units in command prompt.
5. You can also set limits of drawing by typing limits in command prompt.
After this you can start doing drawing in CAD..

Before start my drawing or design I will look through the drawing on dimension and prepare the drawing library. If the drawing need to see on 3D perspective, I will do the sketches or 3D perspective in sketchup just for a revision view. Next continue doing drawing in CAD.
Any new project I feel free to start with Autocad.

Set a scale and dimension and start drawing
From the 'File', select new file. Then set the Limits according to drawing. Adjust the UCS icon. Adjust the View bu using 'Zoom' command. Then start drawing
