The primary reason lies in colonialism - the British Empire was the largest in the world in the heydays of colonialism, and wherever they ruled they left a legacy of the language. In all the erstwhile colonies, English became lingua franca for the locals. But that apart, the rise of America has helped English become a world language. America, an English speaking country, initially brought slaves from Africa and anglicized them, and the rise of industrialism and development of technology in the English speaking world generated more work and more job opportunities there, forcing a large chunk of population in many countries to learn English. Since most of the world business is done in English, it has become a necessity in the developing world too.

ððð1. It is the most spoken language in the world, I hope that you inform us!!!
