There is an important element that is often overlooked by both teachers and learners of English, and this crucial element is the purpose of learning the second language. If it is for social purposes, then go ahead and learn English the way you like. If it is for educational purposes, then you need an organized and planned course of English. If you need it for work, then you need a very specific course of English. As for you question, I recommend learning the grammar of English and I think grammar is very important because it gives shape to the mass of langauge you might acquire from any source.

In English, the four basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are interrelated. "I read the newspaper this morning" and "I read the newspaper everyday." make this abundantly clear. The word read in the present tense is pronounced with a long e and sounds like the word reed; in the past tense, the word read is pronounced with a short e and sounds like the word red. Another example of this is the word bow. "Take a bow," which is pronounced like the word bough; and "Mary wore a red bow in her hair," which is pronounced like the French word beau as in the phrase beau geste. In isolation, the phrase

English teacher is ambiguous. Native speakers resolve this problem through the use of two different intonation patterns; compare the intonation of  "Jose Gonzales lives in the white house on the corner" and

"Barak Obama lives in the White House." Illiterate Americans make many grammatical and phonemic errors in their speech. Phrases like "My Bad" (Am I bad) manifest this fact. The speech of a four-year-old child is very different than that of a forty-year-old lawyer. Of course, the same is true of Arabic. It takes many years of schooling to be able to read Classical Arabic texts properly.

In order to be able to learn  language proficiency , one has to be in an environment where the very language is spoken, or you have to be in close contact with people using the language. If you do not have such an opportunity, practice the language in question following the natural way of learning a language and that is Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Native speakers of English Language, acquire language and its grammar. They do not learn it. ESL students have to learn English language and English grammar is no exception.

Hi,

We learn our mother tounge by listening, speaking, understanding, reading and then writing. but we learn other languages the other way round. we first write then read, understand, speak and then we listen. the best way to learn english is to make it a habit, as we made our mother tounge a habit rest will automatically happen.

If the English you are listening to or reading happens to be grammatically correct then there isn't a problem! If they aren't correct they will still help you to learn "conversational" English. However if you are going to apply your English in a business context it would be prudent to concentrate on Grammar, which would ensure that business letters, contracts etc are completed correctly. In the business world this would help with your "professional" image.

"indeed." Grammar is the backbone of a language and without it any single thing you know may be flux, in a sort of jelly without much consistency. In a nutshell, grammar provides you with the structure you need in order to organize and put your messages and ideas across. It is the railway through which your messages will be transported. Without it, in the same way as a train cannot move without railways, you won’t be able to convey your ideas to their full extension without a good command of the underlying grammar patterns and structures of the language.

The best way to learn English is to speak English. For speaking correctly you need to learn grammar corectly and improve your vocabulary by listening and reading. This will help you to gain confidence.

Grammar helps us monitor the output, while reading and listening help us develop our reservoir. So both are important.
