The term APIPA means Automatic Private IP Addressing which refers as an assigning of an IP when there is no DHCP available. Usually when an IP ranging from 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 is assigned to a host, we consider it as an APIPA in a Microsoft platform. When DHCP becomes available, APIPA stops itself. The advantage of APIPA is it can be used as a backup of DHCP, because when DHCP stops working then APIPA has the ability of assigning IP to the networking hosts.
