I've experience in monitoring with Solarwinds and I consider it a powerful tool.

It is possible to customize a lot of feature and adding sensor points on workstations you can have statistics about application network performances.

You can use Wireshark, Nagios or Solarwinds.

For traffic analyzing Microsoft TMG, Fortinet Firewall are being used in large environments.

 

Wireshark provides in depth packet analyzing and as said can check hundreds of protocols but
