Depending upon the topic, sentences can be long or short. However, short sentences are preferred. The reasons behind it are:

- easy to understand for all even in first reading.

- less effort to build it grammatically.

- no complicated sentence structure.

- minimal chances of grammar mistake.

- enables reader to read fluently without hurdles of sentence intricacies.

- poor punctuation in long sentences make them poor to understand.

- one wrong long sentence can spoil the whole text.

Length of sentence depends upon your thoughts and the way you connect one idea with the other. You can make sentences longer using sentence connectors, commas, dash, brackets, semicolon and relative pronouns. Example:

"The results show that on an average. percent respondent teachers show their agreement to the positive direction statements, that is, they confirm the researcher’s belief that they use traditional methods of teaching English, mostly explaining grammatical structures in the class, disregarding CLT and communicative approach to teaching English as a foreign language, while only percent of the respondent teachers disagree with the positive direction, that is, they indicate that they implement CLT in their English classes."

This is just one sentence. It can be broken up into4 sentences:

"The results show that on an average. percent respondent teachers show their agreement to the positive direction statements. They confirm the researcher’s belief that they use traditional methods of teaching English. They mostly explain grammatical structures in the class, disregarding CLT and communicative approach to teaching English as a foreign language. Only percent of the respondent teachers disagree with the positive direction, that is, they indicate that they implement CLT in their English classes."

What is better? Well, it depends upon what you are writing. If it is a non-academic writing, keep the sentences short to keep your write up simple. In academic circles, complexity is a mark of scholarship, so, you can't avoid using long sentences, though some people prefer short and crisp sentences in academic writing too.

In dialogues we us a lot of short sentences. We use short questions like "where do you live ?' etc.In good essays we often need to use long sentences to convey intellectual ideas. There is no definite answer for an absurd question like that.
