It is a vast topic but to summarise it I would say that an effctive selling is an art.
It needs deep market knowledge,sales statistics of the similar products in the past, product segmentation , targetting the customer group and positioning the product,advertising and then you need to follow 4 P's of marketing. Budgeting and finally the control mechanism whereby the all the above activities are converted to effective action.
As regarding the distribution .The aim is to provide the right product at right place and at right time.The type of distibution stategy will again depend upon the type of product ,volume of business,target population and company budget etc..Usually marketing channels could be used to do the distibution job.
