The main characteristics of Islamic Banking are as follows:

1. It's a Riba-free system (no lending or borrowing operations with interest)

2. Money is not traded in as a commodity in the Islamic Banking system but rather as a means of exchange.

3. Islamic banking is involved in real asset-based economic and business transactions through the following modes: Mudaraba / Murabaha / Musharaka / Istisna / Muzara^a and Ijaarah. Those operations are real business operations which add value through trade / buying and selling

4. Islamic banking system takes risks with different degrees of acuity depending on the mode of operation it's using

5. Islamic banking abides by morals, ethics and the code of Islamic conduct complying with Islamic Shari^ah law which brings blessing in the transactions. 

6. Islamic banking system is a just system that cares for the needy and gives room for good will and helps the society in different social ways, not just the business way.
