The simplest one word answer is controlling. Not only in calcining plant but also in every other plants for controlling the process logic. The advantage of using PLC than other items is that whenever the customer wants to change a logic it can be done without any wiring changes or any other hardworks. PLC is reliable also. That means we can trust it.Once commissioned we dont have to worry about any problems from process controlling.

As PLC is a Controller  simply it take sensor values as an input and give some instructions in the form of signals to the actuators to perform some sort of functions.

I don't know the proper function of the lime calcining plant but can understand that the whole function is controlled by the PLC.
