Project Management Plan contains all other plans, it's answering how you want to do your project, it has13 other plans inside it, and3 baselines (according to PMBOK), but you can have as many project plans as you want, including a project execution plan, in which answers how you would execute.

The Difference Between the Project Execution Plan and Project Management Plan

There are many differences between the project plan and project management plan. Some of them are as follows:

  • The project plan describes the plan broadly with less attention to detail. It deals with high level planning. On the other hand, the project management plan is described with every possible detail.
  • The project plan deals with the “what” part of the project, and the project management plan deals with “how” part of the project.
  • The project plan is a visionary document, it defines the vision. The project management plan is executed to achieve the vision.
  • The project plan gives you the vision to complete the project successfully, while the project management plan defines and develops the system to be used to complete the project successfully.
  • For larger projects, the project plan and project management plan are different, but for smaller projects they can be merged.                                                                                                                   Please note that the PMBOK Guide does not differentiate the project plan and project management plan, and therefore this topic is not very important from a PMP exam point of view. I have written this blog post because I thought it would be a good read for you, and you should be able to differentiate these two terms if you ever encounter them.

Project Management plan is that how are you going to plan the project. For example, How are you going to define the project scope; how the budget will be prepared; what is going to be the change mechanism etc etc.

On the other hand the project execution plan is actually your project implementation plan that how are you going to execute the Project Management Plan.

The dfferent is big Plan what I will do, when, how, by whom, why.

But execution is just the appling of the plan.

Project execution plan is nothing but the integrated result of followingbaselines and plans

3 baselines:

scehdule baseline: when to do

scope baseline: what is to be done and what is not to be done

Cost Baseline:at what cost work will be performed

HR Plan: Who will execute

Procurement Plan: What resources will be acquired to execute a particular activity

Quality Plan: What is the process to do the work and how the output/outcome will be tested/inspected/gauged and how process will be improved

Risk management Plan and Document: what are the risks associated with the particular activity and how risks will be avoid mitigated or accepted.

Change management Plan: guides who can trigger a change request (if it is not possible to perform an activity according to plan) who will asses the change and alternatives, and procedure to call a meeting.

Now if you have formal or informal understanding of how you will carry out the work keeping all above in mind that is your execution plan.
