Idiom is an expression that doesn't exactly mean what the words say.
Idioms are a common use in all language because they share cultural and historical information and we can't understand people without them.
Idioms and phrases are one part and aspect of any language. They may not directly influence language learning, but they do add to your repertoire of set expressions with set meanings. And since native speakers use them in their speech, it is essential for foreign language learners also to use them. They make your speech idiomatic and contemporary, not bookish.
