What's a time you exercised leadership? What is the logic behind this question during the interview?

The quality leadership is not a one-time affair in a month or year rather it happens continuously in office, group work, meeting, and social gathering.

The logic behind the question is that the interviewer is going ascertain how often you exercise leadership. The answer should be from a very recent leadership activity (not a one year old activity). So, the answer may be as follows:

 “In the monthly all staff meeting held yesterday, we as member Finance Section presented a report on budget variance of core program activities. I prepared the slides of budget variance and my colleague presented it in power point before the audience. I volunteered to answer all the questions regarding the calculation procedure which was really appreciated by the all staff. Seeing the usefulness, my HR Colleagues requested for such variance of Support activities like HR, Admin, Operation, I gladly accepted to present the same in the next meeting”

 The above reply indicates that the leadership activity happens on continuous basis.

Depending on what's more important for the the role, you'll want to choose an example that showcases your project management skills (spearheading a project from end to end, juggling multiple moving parts) or one that shows your ability to confidently and effectively rally a team. And remember: “The best stories include enough detail to be believable and memorable,” says Skillings. “Show how you were a leader in this situation and how it represents your overall leadership experience and potential.”

It  is about when your really used managerial/leadership skills and tools to deal with certain situation !
