What is line organization?

Line organization is the most oldest and simplest method of administrative organization. According to this type of organization, the authority flows from top to bottom in a concern. The line of command is carried out from top to bottom. This is the reason for calling this organization as scalar organization which means scalar chain of command is a part and parcel of this type of administrative organization. In this type of organization, the line of command flows on an even basis without any gaps in communication and co-ordination taking place.

Business or industry structure with self-contained departments. Authority travels downwards from top and accountability upwards from bottom along the chain of command, and each department manager has control over his or her department's affairs and employees

The line organization consists  in sharing the cost, not between products, but between the tasks and functions essential to the product elaboration. The purpose of this activity analysis is to spot those that actually add value, which are competitive ( the company realize them as well, and possibly better than competitors). Each of them requires a number of resources, is the "cost" of this activity, we must also take into consideration the complementarity, synergy between these activities that keep coming. Hence the value line of scheme:

Line of internes activities: supply - processing - distribution (source of value)

The analysis of the value chain presents to evidence a more strategic interest than accounting. It is a question to spot the activities for which the value perceived by the user is high. When the perceived value is insufficient, we must strengthen the activity or give up, if this activity also has a low relative value (it consumes relatively too many resources, and it would be less expensive to acquire from the outside).

In Line organization the direct authority is exercised by a superior over his subordinates.he flow of authority is always downwards.Its also called vertical organization.
