From my own view, Social media in the workplace can be a valuable tool for businesses on the other hand. One valuable benefit of social media at workplace is employees engagement however It can also cause serious problems on the job collapsing productivity e.g. employers might log in their facebook, twitter or social networking to update their profiles or contact friends wasting the time for work tasks. Therefore, Employers are faced with the need to develop social media policies that allow the company to reap the positive benefits of social media use while minimizing the negative effects. For instances Employers may try to limit the use of social media at work by restricting access to certain websites.i think that one of negative sides of social media at workplace is problems occur when employees abuse work internet access for personal use during work hours. Employers must decide if the use of social media outweighs the potential for negative impacts.

Thanks

Actually it affect with both sides Positively & Negatively, Why:

  • Positively : because it gave for employees a space to do another things , and let them connecting with the world while they are at the work in the office, and it helps (SM) in work process implementation in somehow, by creating team groups via Whatsapp, Viber , imo and it easier some communication between employees to do their work and tasks.
  • Negatively : it caused to waste time for employees when they spending times and times to use Facebook , Taking Selfies and share it on Instagram and other (SM), chatting via Whatsapp and other (SM).

Anyways, (SM) should be monitored through working hours, not forbidden but under control to get benefit from it.

I believe that this answer depends on how the leader can keep his employees motivated to do their work. I speak my mind as I am an employee also. I really believe that it all falls on the managers shoulders and let me tell you why. When you treat your employees like machines and make them work every second of their working hours you are sure to see negative effects regarding social media usage in work places. Same thing falls for when work is slow and low. Boredom will befall the people and they will find ways to entertain themselves. The human being has something called an attention span which is the time he uses his mind to focus on a certain issue. In science it is said that more the person is motivated in the activity he is doing the more he can elongate his attention span willingly. And now the question will be how to keep your employees motivated in the work place so as to maximize performance???

Ankita Sahoo

This is solely dependent on the employees characteristics and motivation at the work place.  A responsible employee could use the social media to enhance his work skills and gather information or data which could possibly aid him with this work. However it can serve as a major distraction from work as well if the employee sought to do so.

In my opinion, social media in connection with the career can only have positive effect if theprofessional networking supported. LinkedIn can be a good example of how the field news are exchanged and questions being answered by experts. So a person should be clear for checking benefits of exchangong opions for actually improving his/her performance.

Yet, friendly facebook chats shoudl not interfere in the work time. it will distract attention. Leave the fun time for personal after hours :)

To be honest... We do not need it on the workplace as social media is 9 out of 10 private.

Sure it is beneficial  when your employee gets the hottest news that a child in the family is born or all other happy news in the world , which cheer someone up, no doubt about that, but there are limits! Seriously  limits.

15 years ago it did not exists, and what did an employee do? Yes correct socializing on the workplace With your collegues. But to scroll hours on Internet That is not in business interest to socialize with others and/or with complete strangers?  You got my point?
