Groundwater becomes contaminated with leaking sewage and nutrient rich irrigation water, forming surface ponding in low areas. This may become a health hazard, with europhication giving algal blooms and mosquito breeding. A groundwater control piped network is required, with proper wastewater treatment.

If the water stagnates and there is constant inflow of contaminated water, it can undergo eutrophication due to oxygen depletion. As oxygen depletes, aerobic processes suffer that can lead to excessive nutrients such as Nitrogen and Phosphorus causing harmful algal blooms. There is also intensive anaerobic bacterial growth, causing increased cases of E. coli outbreaks and lead to dangerous conditions for human health.
