Static VAR Compensator (SVC) is “a shunt-connected static VAR generator or absorber whose output is adjusted to exchange capacitive or inductive current so as to maintain or control specific parameters of the electrical power system”. SVC is based on thyristor-controlled and switched shunt component without gate turn-off capability. It is a variable impedance device using back to back connected thyristor valves to control the current flow through reactor. SVC as a control device offers fast response time and much faster than traditional mechanically switched reactors or capacitors.

  1. Static var compensators (SVC's) are devices that can quickly and reliably control line voltages.SVC's typically regulate and control voltage to the require set point under normal steady and state contingency conditions and therefor provide dynamic, fast response reactive power flowing system contingencies. I think that's how SVC at the same time enhance stabilization and enable smarter grid.......
