In my opinion, first get the demo of the tool from its website, about it works. (Generally paid tools do have their working demos). Get help files (.pdf/.chm) from demo version of tool. It helps a lot in understanding the tools functions and operations.
Getting hands-on, Self study is best which can help you in better understanding of tools.
I have worked on same strategy for QTP, LR. It worked for me.
