The structure is iron, but the only the outerskin is made of copper. Copper is highly resistant to weather, it will eventually oxidize to get its greenish verdigris patina (copper chloride) which is tough enough to protect the bulk of the copper below. It deosn't looses the natural strength of the metal, but it stops forming as soon as every portion exposed is covered with this protective coating. Moreover copper is also relatively easy to shape, which was a requirement in turning flat panels in the required figure

Archaeological evidence suggests that copper is among the earliest metals used by humans. Copper was used to make utensils, jewelry, and weapons. The metal is highly ductile, meaning that it can be easily worked and pulled into wire. For cultures which had minimal or crude metalworking abilities, copper would have been easy to shape and work with. The metal is highly conductive of both electricity and heat. Copper is also relatively corrosion resistant, since it forms a patina which resists oxidation. For this reason, copper is often mixed with other metals to form alloys such as bronze and brass.

Copper is very resistant to weather, it is also relatively easy to shape, which was a requirement in turning flat panels in the required figure.

The inside structure is iron, but the outer " skin" is copper. Copper is very resistant to weather, it will eventually oxidize and combine with salt to get its greenish verdigris patina (copper chloride) which is tough enough to protect the bulk of the copper below. Copper is also relatively easy to shape, which was a requirement in turning flat panels in the required figure.
