it depends on the nature / type of structure , for underground structure i prefer the membrane water proofing product from MAPIE m we are using in our project in DOHA METRO , for waterproofing underground station. there is also Bitumen emulsion and cementious
now that is my speciallity indeed, the answer to your question depends on several factors like
the best water proofing that can beat all the factors above can be 2 component polyurethane coating like CEMTEC A2 Black PU or CEMTEC UNIFLEX PU. will work in harsh conditions even below ground water table and can give up to 20 years of warranty.
if you want to scale down a bit use 1 component poyurethane coating like CEMTEC A1 Black PU or Elastoroof PU.
cementitious materials come later if you don't have ground water table same as coal tar epoxies and bituminous products.
prefab rolls like bituminous sheets may have shorter life span specially when it comes to ground water table or submirsible conditions.
PVC and EPDM membranes are good but they need special applicators to do the job for you which will men an extra cost.

Instead of Bituminous Coating, I would like to suggest you to apply Cementicious Coating (like Nitocote CM 210 from FOSROC). I always got best results with this product.

Water proofing must be applied in 3 procedures:
Externally using two layers of membrane & one protection layer.
Adding special chemicals to the concrete mixture.
Internally using anti toxic and anti bacterial epoxy paint.
Till Date, the crystalline waterproofing technology is the best for water reservoirs. some of the are kryton. xypex. pagel wpc. schlumberg Bitocrete C series. etc. the best waterproofing tech for the concrete waterproofing.
depending on you water table and the level of protection required, also comparing the budget of the item, you can go for many types of waterproofing
1-self adhesive
2-spray waterproofing
3-welded type waterproofing.
we should apply the best way for that which first clean the concrete surface first then painting by bituminous chemical then appling two layer of membrane into two different directions with consideration of layer two should start from the joints of layer one .
BASEMENT:
The concrete shall be made waterproof using a combination of silica fume based additive (such as Sikacrete PP1) and High Range Water Reducing admixtures (such as Sikament or Sika Viscocrete) The cement content and Water/Cement ratio shall be decided based on project requirements (in terms of concrete strength and required workability. The concrete design mix and admixtures dosages shall be approved and finalised after trial mixes have been carried out.
