The main reason is that power control more difficult in case of DC i.e power from genrating station to the receiving station and voltage changing alsoa problem requires additional circuitry those are bulky, less efficient and very costly. But in AC by using transformer these difficulties can overcome and transformer is highly efficeint electric machine.
The reason is that AC voltage can be easily transformed from one voltage level to other with the help of transformer. Stepping up the voltage level during transmission will reduce the power loss in the line. At the consumer end, voltage could be stepped down.
On the other hand, DC voltage cannot be stepped up. You have to convert to AC with rectifier and then use transformer as it is done in HVDC transmission. HVDC becomes economical only when the transmission distance is very long. So AC transmission is mostly used.
Also, most of the consumer equipments are AC, so we have to use AC.
