Knowlege of both softwares are essential. Machanical Engineer should learn both of them. Better is depending on your job, whatever company needs, you will have to work on it.

Catia and autocadd both are for mechanical as well as civil engineer........

But for 2D drawings autocadd is preferred and for 3D drawing Catia is favourable

A mechanical engineer must learn both of the softwares because for 2D designs AutoCAD is used and for 3D designs Catia is used.

Autocad, because it is user friendly and easy to exist.

Mainly AutoCAD is used for 2D designing and to prepare drawings even though it is possible to work on 3D modelling it is not suggests for 3D modelling. Catia software is mainly focused on surface modelling and it is equipped with other utilities like 3D modelling, surface modelling, sheet metal, etc., Catia can also used for analysis purposes So for an engineer both the softwares are important AUTOCAD is a basic software Catia is an advanced software So both the software's are better for an engineer.

Try to learn the 3D software which helps you to understand first about the product knowledge. about whole project or product design you may get clear idea with only 3D software if you are a beginner in product design.

AUTO CADD  used in all mechanical company.....

CATIA used in specfic manufacturing company (these companys are also using auto cadd)

Auto cadd is the first step of mechnical stairs....

aswering directly to your question --> CATIA, as it provides possibility to work both in 3D and 2D where ACAD allows 2D (non-parametric) only :) .... there are many CAD systems, each of them has its pluses or minuses (NX, CATIA, CREO, SolidWorks, SolidEdge and so on... :) ) - you can do basically everything with all listed, dependent how fluent you are in operating
