The reason is that AC voltage can be easily transformed from one voltage level to other with the help of transformer. Stepping up the voltage level during transmission will reduce the power loss in the line. At the consumer end, voltage could be stepped down.

On the other hand, DC voltage cannot be stepped up. You have to convert to AC with rectifier and then use transformer as it is done in HVDC transmission. HVDC becomes economical only when the transmission distance is very long. So AC transmission is mostly used.

Also, most of the consumer equipments are AC, so we have to use AC.

DC systems are costlier, needs high technical design.

In ac system, it easy to change the voltages and current by transformer.

we can step up and step down the voltages / current easily in ac system

while in dc system we have to convert dc to ac and then back to dc to change the voltages .the conversion and inversion of ac /dc carry alot of harmonics in the system .So to remove these harmonics we have to use expensive filters. so thats why we preferred ac over dc system.

ac system is better for long distance transmation .....and cheaper
