Infect, GIS needs less space than the AIS because Gases (like SF6) provides better insulation than the Air, therefore its better option to go for AIS instead of GIS. But this is the case if you consider the price of land only.

With GIS, there are further extra O&M and Environmental constraints those require attention of an Engineer before taking the decision. Overall, GIS is best option as long as SF6 is there in the Market.

Gas Insulated System should be preferred in the case of high Land cost.

If the cost of land is high, then GIS will be preferred over the AIS. GIS is having following advantages:

  • requires less space (up to% less that Air Insulated)
  • is safer in operation
  • has overall lower system loses
  • has higher protection against ambient conditions
  • is more reliable

However there are some limitations wrt AIS:

  • AIS is cheaper
  • Maintenance is less complex than GIS
  • Spares are cheap

However when there is imitation of space, GIS is the choice.

A GIS is mostly used where space is expensive or not available,AIS requires meters of air insulation to do what SF6 can do in centimeters.
