As a manager, best to limit to the monitoring of daily work progress reports and not to the details. Except when the smoothness of the operation is disturbed.  Because manager job role is to manage and integrate the resources of all type required for any task or tasks, and not to involve into details of daily work unnecessarily. The biggest cons of manager involving himself/herself into details of daily work will increase stress on employee that he/she is under constant observation and is not trusted with the job to be done.

You dont have to be involved in the detaliing on a day to day basis.

However, you need to be completely aware of all the details. This can be done through regular meetings/reviews with the Team leads or Supervisors.

Also, you need to stay engaged with the team at all levels and this can be achieved by conducting skip level meetings.

If someone aims towards successfully managing people, he/she should have sufficient knowledge of the daily work detail. This knowledge can come in two ways: waiting for it to be communicated to the manager by his subordinates (with all the risks this tactic comes with) or by the manager obtaining it by being actively involved.

By involving yourself in daily work, you get to have firsthand access to any information you need, you get to bond with and know your employees better and you can answer to senior management more effectively.

A manager balances between employees and senior management; in order to do that successfully, he/she needs to be involved with both.

To a certain extent, yes. Employees should understand that you have good knowledge of each unit & that your "door is open" for any problems. I find employees are motivated by a manager who knows & can asssit with difficulties or problems experienced by the employees.

The manager should be the first person an employee approaches with any work related (or private if this affects work) issues.

In short, Yes in a different fashion and infrequently.

Different fashion mean, sometime get involved with random person to help them and share my experience and best practices when needed. Idea is prove I am part of them and monitoring in details.

infrequently means, I will have some time-slot in my busy calendar.
