News Number One: Facebook Expands User Control Over Ad Preferences and Combats Ad-Blocking
Well, remember how random concerts and music festivals' ads would show on the right pane of Facebook if you browsed maybe the pages of TomorrowLand or Coachella? That is because the algorithm at Facebook reads that as your interest and shows you relevant ads.
However, many people complained about Facebook showing irrelevant ads and that the lack of user control on those ads was annoying.
Now Facebook (as of today) has improved its Ad controls by giving users the control over their ad preferences. If you don't wish to see a certain type of ad like cars or office supplies, you can uncheck that in your ad preferences. This improvement will give the users more control over how their data forms the ads which they see.
When they’re relevant and well-made, ads can be useful, helping us find new products and services and introducing us to new experiences — like an ad that shows you your favorite band is coming to town or an amazing airline deal to a tropical vacation. But because ads don’t always work this way, many people have started avoiding certain websites or apps, or using ad blocking software, to stop seeing bad ads. These have been the best options to date.
We’ve designed our ad formats, ad performance and controls to address the underlying reasons people have turned to ad blocking software. When we asked people about why they used ad blocking software, the primary reason we heard was to stop annoying, disruptive ads. As we offer people more powerful controls, we’ll also begin showing ads on Facebook desktop for people who currently use ad blocking software.
Second MAJOR news:
The Federal Trade Commission is moving to tighten the rules for marketers working with social media influencers when it comes to disclosures alerting consumers that they are seeing paid content, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news last week.
Michael Ostheimer, a deputy chief in the FTC’s Ad Practices Division, warned in the Bloomberg interview that the commission will be increasing the requirements for disclosure on sponsored posts, with most of the burden falling on advertisers (as opposed to the influencers who are paid to make the posts). Ostheimer explained: “We believe consumers put stock in endorsements and we want to make sure they are not being deceived.”
Among other thing the new, stricter rules dictate that brief disclosures like “#ad,” “#sp,” “#spon,” and “#sponsored” will no longer be sufficient in many cases, principally because consumers are unlikely to notice them and understand their meaning – which is doubtless part of the reason marketers favored them in the first place.
Much of their acceptability depends on how prominently they are displayed: thus “#ad” may be acceptable by itself if it comes first in the post before all other content, but not at the end. By the same token, truncated or abbreviated disclosures like “#sp” and “#spon” aren’t acceptable by themselves, regardless of position, because consumers can’t reasonably be expected to know what they’re supposed to stand for.
Ostheimer tells Bloomberg: “If consumers don’t read the words, then there is no effective disclosure… If you have seven other hashtags at the end of a tweet and it’s mixed up with all these other things, it’s easy for consumers to skip over that. The real test is, did consumers read it and comprehend it?”
Importantly, on sponsored video posts the disclosure must be spoken out loud or displayed on screen.
Additionally, all forms of compensation should be disclosed, including those beyond straightforward cash payments, including free products and services provided to influencers by brands or agencies.
The commission is already enforcing tighter standards for brands working with online influencers. Last month the FTC rapped Warner Bros. for failing to include “conspicuous” disclosures in a social influencer campaign to promote its Lord of the Rings game, “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.” As part of a settlement with the company the FTC required that Warner Bros. implement an internal compliance system and make sure that influencer partners are also aware of the rules regarding disclosure.

1.instagram Introduces Instagram Stories: Instagram debuted Instagram Stories, a new feature that lets you “share multiple photos and videos… in a slideshow format: your story.” With Instagram Stories, “you can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools” and “the photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.” According to the Instagram blog, Instagram Stories will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks and will be available on both iOS and Android.
2.Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced on Tuesday that they are donating $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to fight Ebola.
Zuckerberg revealed the donation in a post on Facebook (of course), the site that has made him into the $33 billion man he is today. In a status update, Zuckerberg compared the disease to Polio and HIV, noting that 8,400 people have already been infected by Ebola and that it has the potential to spread quickly.
