Waffle slab are a reinforced concrete footing and slab system constructed on ground. They consist of a edge beam and a series of strip footings. They are only suitable for very specific locations.

In hordy slab hollow blocks are used for filling the slab

It is a RC slab mixed with blocks or voids or other light material

it is used in big spans from 4 to 12m

it can be one way or two way

the main steel will be in the rips and it covered with topping slab with light reinforcement

Waffle slab is two way ribbed sytem of reinforcements whereas hollow block slab uses hollow blocks for filling the inside of slab

Waffle Slab

Waffle slabs are a reinforced concrete slab system consisting of edge beams and a series of narrow internal beams (Ribs) in both directions (perpendicular).

They are either one-way spanning systems known as ribbed slab or a two-way ribbed system known as a waffle slab. This form of construction is not very common because of the formwork costs and the low fire rating.

A 120-mm-thick slab with a minimum rib thickness of 125 mm for continuous ribs is required to achieve a 2-hour fire rating.

Hordy Slab(Hollow Block Slab)

Hollow blocks are used to fill portions of the slab thickness; this results in deeper arm for the reinforcement while saving the amount of concrete and hence the own weight of the slab.

The reinforcement is located between the blocks inside the ribs.

Blocks may be concrete blocks or styro- foam

When the ribs are in one direction then it is a one-way hollow block slab, regardless of the rectangularity.

When ribs are in both directions then it is a two-way hollow block slab.
