Backup of your .pst files and keep it. Do not simply copy your old .pst into the folder that has the new one. The correct way to get your old .pst files into a new Outlook is by using the "Import" procedure. Find it under "File" > "Import-Export". Finished.

If you do not use Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook stores all its data in a .pst file. You can use the backup copy to restore your Outlook data if the original .pst file is damaged or lost. This section explains how to create a copy of your whole .pst file, with all the default items in the file.Follow these steps to back up the whole .pst file:

  1. Close any messaging programs such as Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, or Microsoft Windows Messaging.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER: control panel Control Panel opens.Note If you see the Pick a category screen, click User Accounts, and then go to step 3.
  3. Double-click the Mail icon.
  4. Click Show Profiles.
  5. Click the appropriate profile, and then click Properties.
  6. Click Data Files.
  7. Under Name, click the Personal Folders Service that you want to back up. By default, this service is called Personal Folders. However, it may be named something else.

Option-1 Close all the files related to office then run the setup for office2013 and there we will find the upgrade option. Just simply tap on it  and the setup starts to run. After the installation completes we can restart the PC/laptop. In this process the data i.e .pst file will not be lost.

Option 2 We need to take the backup of our .PST file and then uninstall the current Ms office and then install the new office 2013, after installation move to the control panel then click on email and add all account information, we will select pop type and at right side we observe browse option and from there we need to select  .PST file. From there it starts storing back mails in your new office outlook.

You can install Office 2013 and have it replace an older version. You should not have to worry about the PST file. Making a backup is always a prudent step when performing a major upgrade. Many Office add-ins still have not been upgraded to 64-bit and therefore won't work with 64-bit Office. The 64-bit version can support much larger spreadsheets for one.

Microsoft does not provide a tool that upgrades the PST from ANSI to UNICODE. The safety way is to create a new UNICODE PST and move the old Outlook items to new PST files. There are many third party tool available for doing this task, but I recommend you to take a help of this tool:- Upgrade Outlook from Older to Newer. First download the demo version and check the procedure.
