it depends on the product's category, purchase patterns, competition and your brand positioning. Needs-based selling provides you with room for cross/up selling and to further define future products. If you have a product that doesn't requires much thinking for the customer to purchase then you have to adopt a hard selling strategy to meet your sales target. In fact your question is at the divide between sales and marketing which is the key factor of success or failure of a brand product!

Which would you say would be most effective in meeting your targets? Can you say to yourself that you did a good job if you force someone to buy your product or service by hard-selling? Or be proud that you helped someone realize that they need your product or service that is why they avail of it?

Well, Target and needs are very much connected, actullay the whole point of sales is based on finidng those who have needs for your service / product.
