The Communication between the Fire Alarm Control panel and all devices on panel's loop, is to give each device an address so it's like the panel send and receive signals in between.it's different in conventional Fire Alarm Control Panel which depend on the following of current in loop circuit.

Smoke detector works on 'Scattering of light principal'. Manufacturing of smoke detector is such that there is a LED(may be two in Dual optical detectors) and a photodiode. When the smoke particles enters the smoke chamber, the light from LED which normally travels straight gets scattered due to smoke particles & scattered light falls on photodiode generating current. This change in electric parameter is compared with the stored value in Intelligent Processor of detectors. If the electric signal matches the threshold of Alarm then, the condition is considered as true alarm & panel indicates the address of detector as being in Alarm State.
The efficiency & intelligence of any detector is measured by the values stored in its Signal Processor to avoid False Alarm.
For eg.: BOSCH LSN improved detectors has an INTELLIGENT SIGNAL PROCESSOR to process the electric signal and compare it with its inbuilt 5000 stored values to decide if the condition is TRUE ALARM or FALSE ALARM.
