1- what the process is? Industrial process 

2- the Industrial Controllers (PLC, SCADA,DCS,..)

3- The medium of control ( mechanical , electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic Actuators.)

The basic courses for automation engineer is " Advanced Diploma in industral Automation (ADIA)"

then learn SCADA software like wonderware intouch which will give u a general idea about the work of SCADA 

then HMI ,VFD DCS, sensors ,pnumatic and hydrolic control etc
