PMP certification is to enable you to stand out among the rest of the applicants. Experience is to add value to the project works based on the knowledge acquired with the PMP course.

Experience helps you to handle works on site as a routine or as an assignment. PMP ceritification helps you to access the situation and analyse the issue before a decision is taken and act upon. Enlightenment along with relevant education goes hand in hand for your career progress.

Personally, I don't believe the two are comparable and/or necessarily operate competitively. PMP certification is training aiming towards preparing and rendering someone capable of successfully starting a career in project management; experience in project management is invaluable, since it is comprized of real-life situations, issues and facts.

The combination of training and experience is the ideal combination, however, if I had to choose between the two, personally, I would go for the experience.

I hope I hwas helpful.

the experience is more important because the PMP book and subsequently its certification is formed by issues gained  from experience

Experience :) And personality... and skills. Of course it is good to have the PMP certification, in some job openings it is a must requirement. No certification is useful unless you have practiced what you have learnt

Experience job at work. Most institutions are looking for experience before certification. But we can not neglect certificates and rely only on experience.
