When I am working on a writing assignment, I proofread it more than once. After I finish it, I will do the first proofread. Usually I will find a few errors, which I correct, but I will also read for the overall effect of the paper. As I am reading through, I will notice other changes I need to make, like two ideas that don't seem to fit together as well as I thought, so I need to separate those into two different paragraphs with two different focus points. After I make these types of changes, I do one last quick proofread from beginning to to end. This usually only takes a few minutes.
It depends on the length of the piece, of course, but it usually takes me a an hour or two of proofreading and editing after I'm done with the writing process.
