In technical writing, your purpose is very different from creative writing or blog/article style writing. Rather than beginning with brainstorming, you usually begin with a set topic or assignment already in mind. There is some project that has been completed, involving something such as software programming or engineering the architecture of a bridge. The job of a technical writer is to take these C++ programs or geological data sets or structural blueprints and to describe them in common language so that the information is easy to understand and can be presented to other people on the project who have different specialties, or to people who need a general understanding of the project in a business context, such as the  management or investors.
