What are some best practices to keep a remote team engaged, connected and productive?

Practices that works for me are taking regular follow up after assigning a task and arrangement of any equipment on remote sites. Surprise visits and meetings with the persons on site and involving their say in decision making makes them feel more involved. Effective circulation of information via minutes of meeting or via emails keep things connected and also both parties remain on same page.
