As far as writing itself goes; grammar, vocabulary etc yes a course is required. However, the idea of a course is counter-productive for creative writing as it takes away the creative aspect and makes a writer follow a pattern all the time which makes his writing boring and uncreative.

When you talk about the writing skills then sometimes you need to improve but in the case of creative writings e.g. book writing novel writing or short stories you can write up-to some limit i.e. hundred or thousand words. then at the end  when you need to be a skill full writer you must enhance your knowledge and writing skills For this purpose, you must read the news paper, books and literature. And if you are using a computer then the machine knowledge and knowledge about software used by you is necessary because you cannot write hundred percent correct. So to improve writing skills, a person must take knowledge about, pure writing skills. the writing courses depend upon the topic and base your own basic knowledge about the topic.
