Thank you for inviting me to answer this interesting question.
From my specialization point of view. Both Safety & Security are parts of Risk Management within the company.
Looking at specifically industrial safety and security:
Similarities that both ensures that people and factory/plant are safe and secured and have healthy environment to run daily operations.
Difference: safety prevents and protects from accidents by negligence or circumstances; while security preventing intruders to enter factory/plant and intentionally damage properties or injure the people; stealing things also included.
Both must work in mutual agreement, while safety ensures people in industry stay safe and at "0" risk to injury, security ensures that people/industry safety remains constant. If variable of safety risk can be predicted, than they can be prevented.
The similarities are
Discipline
Rigor
etc.....
The difference is in the attitude of people against security
The difference between Industrial Safety and Security:
Safety: The condition free from harm or risk.
Security: The state of being free from danger or measures taken to guard against crime, attack or escape.
Similarities
Both provide protection (Allaradah and artificial)
The differences
Safety does not cost much money and economic security, as opposed to artificial cost funds and human resources.
These are two such distinct fields.
Safety for me is to ensure the personnel are safe from any harm, injuries etc and Security for me is prevention of loss to property or personnel or information or Protection thereof and the response to the loss which has taken place.
In both fields, we humans have to follow rules and procedures for our own safety and of those around us and the property.
Both are proactive and investigative process. Security is the process that protect people and properties from intentional damages such as crimes and thefts. Whereas safety is the process that deals with procedures, practices and the environment conditions to protects people and properties from accidental damage.
In an industrial set up meaning a vast area, safety and security functions differently to each other and sometimes creates conflict. The only similarity I know between the two is the word prevention. meaning, prevention of unauthorized entry, prevention of loss of life and property, prevention of terrorist attack, prevention of near misses to occur, etc. etc.
