Good communication skill is very important for a recruiter, it should be professional as well as approachable. We will be able to cultivate and build relationship with the candidate only through a good communication.
It's extremely important for the recruiter to have impeccable communication skills to articulate the question clearly, to vividly put the candidate in role-play scenario, to test his/ her behavior in case-based situations and to express his/ her observations to the candidate post-interview!
A recruiter needs to connect to the person being interviewed. Without this, you cannot extract what you want to know. I personally make it a point to make it as informal as i can. Maybe "like your tie" or "so how was the ride" etc questions which make a person more comfortable and starts thawing the ice.
We need to understand that whenever a person comes in for an interview, no matter how senior or how experienced, he or she will be nervous. That nervourness will continue to be there and affect the responses to your questions till such time that you dont succeed in connecting. Hence it is extremely necessary that we, as recruiters, practice our own communication style and the questions, the tones, the volume, everything. One style wont suit all interviewees. Different nationalities respond differently to the same question or tone or volume of your voice. Those who have been in this field for a long time would understand what i mean by that. there is no one style. Every new candidate needs you to be fresh and crisp. You cant afford to look tired due to the 50 people you met before he or she came in.
Sometimes when i see the person is still nervours, i call him a second time. And that worked !!!
Communication - be it verbal or through gestures should be able to bridge the gap of understanding between the candidate and the interviewer. In a BEI setting, the onus of communicating lies on the recruiter. It is said the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the question that is asked, therefore if the recruiter is not able to communicate the behavioural competency that needs to be assessed, the candidate would not be able to display that. While technical skills can be evaluated through tests, in basket exercises and assessment centers, behavioural evaluation requires a strong understanding & usage of communication on part of the recruiter.
Effective communication skill is a very important for an HR. There should be fluency and clarity in the way you communicate most specially when working on a cross-cultural community/ sector of society. Not only fluency but it is a must to know how to adjust with other people to combat or avoid language barrier problem.
Likewise, having to know that for some other people elevator in (US) is lift in (UK). Hitch or taking a ride (in US) is carlift with UK..As to pail for US and bucket is for UK.
Also not only verbal communication is the cue here. Much focus on the behavioral aspects most specially when in the interview process. Watch out for red flags in focusing with body responses or body language.
If you have background in Psychology you'll tend to know body languages which are indicative of the soon -to-be employee you might be screening & hiring today. you'll easily tell the naughty and the nice. the truthful and the liar. the novice with talent and the expert but the bossy and ill-mannered one.
Such qualities are indicative of whether your hiring an asset or a future problem. OR SHOULD WE SAY THE PERFECT FIT.
Communication is most important tool in any interview
