Progesterone causes relaxation of smooth muscles, including ureter,intestines, biliary system, which causes slowing of stream leading to increased incidence of urinary tract infections,constipation and stasis of the biliary system which increases incidence of cholecystitis and forming of sludges and calculi

Anatomically, during the second and third trimester the gall bladder naturally stretches and enlarges due to the hormones relaxing and progesterone which has relaxation effects to the smooth muscles. There is also lesser motility  of the gall bladder during pregnancy because of the growing fetus and the corresponding expanding uterus.  These structural changes allow the mother not to detect pathological changes in the gall bladder.

• Family history of gallstones, especially on the maternal side.
