What is the difference between application server & web server?

  1. Web Server is used to serve only HTTP content. Application server serves HTTP plus other content like RPC & RMI
  2. Web Server is best suited for static content, and application server for dynamic content.
  3. Web server is less resource intensive because it is mostly used to facilitate serving up web based traffic. Application server facilitate longer running process, thus more resource intensive.
