If a main contractor is eligible enough to complete a project despite of fact many management decides to bring in a sub-contractor. Is it really that necessary to appoint a sub-contractor. Many past surrounding examples shows the project Design issues / execution process / Quality issues / handover on time, has been compromised due to not suitable subcontractors. When everything is crystal clear why do the Main contractors follow and use this practice of using sub-cons? Is it seems to be a trend ?
It is a good question. Most of big projects, the main contractor is unable to complete all works alone without using subcontractors to complete certain parts of the project particularly in a Turnkey project. There are some Pros and Cons for the appointing and selection of subcontractor. The selection process is subject to several considerations in order to avoid any delay in the project execution process. Subcontract has to be qualified and executed before the similar work efficiently and his works or his products have to be evaluated by Project Management, Customer, Stakeholder and Sponsor of the project.
No subcontract was awarded to any sub-contractor without getting all necessary approvals and his name is registered in the Vendors list. Pros of Subcontractors will assist the main contractor to achieve the project on time if they are committed in the time schedule for the deliveries and construction works otherwise the project will delay in the execution process. Sometimes, subcontractors works have Cons and are not consistent with Design & quality issues which will cause delay in the execution process as well as affect on the quality of the implementation.
