Preheating is not recommended, since it increases the time in the sensitization temperature range. The sensitization leads to intergranular corrosion in the heat affected zone.

In Austenitic Stainless steel preheating is not helpful because no structural changes occur, such as martensite formation in weld or in HAZ….. Even in some cases, preheating could be harmful in causing increased carbide precipitation or induce greater warpage.
