Agree with Mr. Anil Lalwani.

There must be some solid reason you could convince your management if you are late, making sure you will not repeat that again, like sometimes it happens when there is some accident and you just stuck in traffic that's obviously not in your control. Or if you were not feeling well and probably you got up late, First thing you need to do is to inform your Immediate Boss for that so they could manage office duties in your absence or due to being late.

In case of Interview, You should never be late, But in case if it happens , obviously there would be some genuine reason, for example, Interview place is far & you are not much familiar with that area, And you think you might not reach to that place on time, Better to call to the Contact person to ask for some assistant and inform about all.  Hopefully they will understand.

Thanks for the invitation

In my view Office and interview both are different issues

If it's office first I will inform to my boss about my late duty to office with a valid reason and try to convince him about the late in office in such a way that he feels that it is not the purposeful but genuine one being beyond my control. Other thing I should try is that I should not repeat the late coming  frequently and also try to compensate it by doing late hours duty in office which is over and above normal working hours.

If it's interview, I should never try to be late and if I am late I should call from my mobile to interviewer or his assistant explaining the reason for delay in such a way that my interview in not cancelled but postponed.

and if they are convince then first I should do is express my sincere thanks in the beginning of interview.

All above are my personal views.

On the rare occasions when I've been late, I have called the office, apologised to and informed the boss when I can be expected. I've never been late for interviews.

What maximum someone can do afterwards - either make reasons or simply appoligise. Important is that from next time onwards even if we are late, we communicate that prior. It make things easier.
