Post tension system is a method used to produce pre-stressed members wherein the stresses are introduced in the member after casting, thereby giving it the name.

Even though the energy losses that are experienced in a post tension system are slightly higher than a pre tension system, there are actually certain fundamental advantages in using this system

  • It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints, are needed
  • Cracks that do form are held tightly together
  • It allows slabs and other structural members to be thinner
  • It allows us to build slabs on expansive or soft soils
  • It lets us design longer spans in elevated members, like floors or beams

And last but not the least in general it proves as more economical when the equipment is available.

1. Post-Tensioning could be done at site and no need to prepare the lifting method of precast beam.

2. Post-tensioning minimizes losses in prestress due to concrete shrinkage.

3. The final tension (P) always equal with the initial tension (Pi), since the Pi is measured after the load (beam self-weight) was applied.

Architects, Structural Engineers, General Contractors, Real Estate Developers, and Owners incorporate post-tensioning systems on their projects in order to achieve economy, efficiency, quicker construction and lower lifetime cost of the structure. Why? Because Post-Tensioning enhances concrete strength under both compressive and tensile stresses.
