Most effective goal is to ensure profitability  and I will do both things as mentioned above ( retaining customer and defeating competitions ) for ensuring profitability and my job.

Customer rentention is more important than "beating" competition because once you rentain customers; they are yours & will be loyal to you thus they will continue buying from you & they might end up persuading or luring others to join the "band wagon". On the other however; "beating competition" is a temporary measure that is effective at that particular time while competitors will always come up no matter what because we are in a competitive Global business village where competition is the order of the day.
