AutoCAD will only use what it needs; you can't force it to use more or less RAM.
but you can optimize various aspects of your computers performance though which is an entirely different subject.
1. make sure your temp folder is emptied regularly, using xrefs leaves a lot of data in the temp folder that can bog down a system.
2. Please set FIELDEVAL to 4, which will only evaluate the fields on plotting thus saving from constant regens.
3. set INDEXCTL to 2, this will index the drawing making any further work in it much quicker.
4. Under the System tab in the options dialog box, set the "Layout Regen options" to "Cache model tab and last layout" this will also help so that switching layouts does not regen the entire drawing each time.
5. In the System Properties->Advanced tab, set "Visual Effects" to "Adjust for best performance" which will lessen the pull of Windows on resources.
