In SEO, measurement is one of the critical aspect to success. We can track any kind of data about back links, referrals and rankings help analyse the SEO strategy. And by going through all of these we can easily create a road maps for success in company's performance online.
Every websites are needed to be evaluated separately for the metrics as every business is unique. And the universal metric plan should be as follows:
1. Search Engine share of referring visits
2. Visits referred by specific search engine terms and phrases
3. Conversion rate by search query term
4. Number of pages receiving at least one visit from search engines
5. Search engine referrals
These metrics must be universally applied to get the maximum value from your SEO campaigns and proportionally increase the business performances.
This question is a bit misleading, because Search Engine Optimization (usually associated with google search) is about optimizing/pushing websites to appear in the top results when certain keywords are entered. Yes it is true that usually if you are appearing at the top it means you are a "well performing" company. However, there are websites which work well with google algorithm and appear first and their performance is not so well. In short, I do not feel that the SEO is a tool to measure company's performance.
While an SEO is not a tool for measuring performance per se, you can make KPIs based on your SEO strategy and the metrics you obtained and therefore, their achievement measures your success in terms of trending/in-demand topics online alongside how current your online SEO strategy really is.
It's not a tool to measure the company's performance but it does help in identity the leads generated to the website and how much conversions you get from it. If your core of the business is from the website than it's can help identify the long term goals and forecast the company's growth rate.
It would be better to look on other important aspects to measure your company's performance. For example your customers , sales targets, financial position, profit etc. SEO is a part of digital marketing & can only give you an indicator that how many visitors & leads you are getting. What are the keywords searched by your target audience to visit your website & how many people searching your brand name.
The level of severity depends on the marketing strategy of the company and nature of the business like ecommerce as SEO is very vital for such business.
A company's organic ranking can be vital in measuring it's performance as it is an indicator of it's online foot-print, authority, relevancy and popularity all across the web's ecosystem. If a company has a high SEO rank, it is because search engines are looking at their domain as a "good" search result to show on their SERPs that will provide relevant data to the search query and provide a good user experience.
Agreed with the individuals below. SEO could be a part of whole digital marketing strategy which can help to get leads through search engine. SEO is not a tool to measure company's performance rather its a technique to get your online goals achieved.
I strongly agree with Jamal. You will need to rephrase your question. SEO cannot measure your company's performance but your company can measure the performance of your SEO activities
