Retention time is the amount of time fluid stays in the vessel. It assures that equilibrium has been reached between gas and liquid at separator pressure

The retention time in a separator is time period for well effluent takes from entring sperator inlet to flow out from separator out-let and determined by dividing the liquid volume inside the vessel by the liquid flow rate. The retention time usually varies between 30 seconds and 3 minutes.
